Academic Advising Home

New Students

All new students will complete an academic profile and take their math and language placement exams. From there, an academic advisor will draft an initial schedule for review. The student will then meet with an academic advisor.

Things to think about:

Before attending your advising meeting, here are some things to take into consideration:

Prepare for your meeting by becoming familiar with what courses you want to take in the next semester. The planning template serves as a guide and will help you identify possible classes you plan to take. You can review this document when you meet with your advisor.

Review the course catalog which allows you to view all courses available for each semester. You can find course descriptions and available majors, minors, and certificates as well.

Check requirements - If you have already declared your major, you can check what major and core requirements you are expected to complete on DegreeWorks

Lastly, consider if there are any specific schedule constraints you have to consider when registering (e.g. work or family commitments). This will be important to think about as you navigate the times and days of the courses you have planned for.

What can I expect?

Your assigned advisor will walk through the recommended courses you should be taking in the next semester. They will also want to learn more about you and what your goals are both here at Xavier and what you hope to do with your degree. If you have any questions regarding your academic progress and timeline, this is where you would ask the related questions. Additionally, you can ask questions regarding your major/minor and if there is something you would like to change/add/drop.

 How can I be prepared?

Please make sure you have sent all your transcripts to Xavier, so your advisor has the most up-to-date credits for you. The registrar’s page has more information regarding credits. You want to schedule your advising appointment at least 2-3 weeks before the registration period begins. Please do not wait until the last minute since there is not a guarantee that your advisor will have the availability to fit you in.
