Living-Learning Communities

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) offer students the opportunity to live in a specialized residential community aimed at enhancing their first year at Xavier by integrating their academic and social experiences. Key features of an LLC include:

  • Shared Interests: Focus on specific themes or disciplines, promoting deeper engagement and peer-to-peer relationships.
  • Academic Support: Shared academic experiences, access to specialized tutoring and workshops, and deeper faculty relationships to increase academic success.
  • Social Engagement: Organized events and activities that foster connections and a greater sense of community and belonging.
  • Enhanced Learning Experiences: Opportunities for experiential learning opportunities that connect to experiences in the classroom, including field trips, guest speakers, and collaborative projects.
  • Development of Life Skills: Encourages the teamwork, communication, and leadership skills valuable for future careers.

LLCs are a collaborative effort between Residence Life and valuable campus partners in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I join an LLC?

A: LLCs offer a supportive environment where students can build connections with peers, faculty, and staff who share their interests. Students in LLCs often report higher academic success, deeper peer relationships, and greater sense of identity and belonging with the campus community.

Q: How is an LLC different from regular residence hall living?

A: LLCs provide specialized programming, faculty engagement, and opportunities for academic and personal development. While all residence halls offer social experiences, LLCs are intentionally designed to integrate learning into the living environment.

Q: Who is eligible to join an LLC?

A: LLCs are open to incoming first-year students and, in some cases, returning students. Some LLCs have specific eligibility requirements, such as major, interests, or enrollment in certain courses.

Q: How do I join an LLC?

A: You can apply to join an LLC through the housing application process. There is an additional section where you select your LLC preferences and answer a few questions about your interest in the community.

Q: Is there a deadline to apply to an LLC?

A: Yes, LLC applications are due when the first-year housing application closes on [DATE HERE]. We encourage early applications, as space may be limited.

Q: Will I have special academic opportunities in an LLC?

A: LLCs offer sections of Core and major-related courses that are specifically offered to LLC participants. Additionally, study groups, peer and faculty mentorship, and opportunities for experiential learning related to the LLC theme are provided.

Q: What kinds of events or activities happen in an LLC?

A: Activities may include faculty or guest-led discussions, off-campus trips, networking events, career workshops, social gatherings hosted by RAs, and service-learning projects.

Q: Can I be part of an LLC if I have a busy schedule?

A: We want you to make the most of your experience at Xavier, including joining clubs, taking trips, making friends, attending event, and more! While being a member of an LLC requires active participation in community activities, programs, and events, being an involved student should not prevent you from being a member of an LLC. If you are worried about balancing all of your commitments with your LLC involvement, you can work with your RA or LLC advisor and peer mentors to make a plan to manage your time.

Q: Where are LLCs located on campus?

A: LLCs are housed in designated residence halls that are selected based on the needs and size of each community. Check out the information about our LLCs above to learn where they are housed.

Q: Can I choose my roommate if I'm in an LLC?

A: When it comes time to pick your roommate on your housing application, you will see a list of students who have also opted into the LLC. You are encouraged to room with a peer who also intends on being a member of the LLC to ensure a smooth and more meaningful experience for both of you!

Q: Do LLCs cost extra?

A: For the 2025-2026 academic year, there is no additional housing charge to be a member of an LLC.

Q: Can I switch out of an LLC if I decide it's not for me?

A: We encourage students to give LLCs a chance, but if it’s not the right fit, you may have the opportunity to move after a designated period, subject to space availability.

Q: How can parents and families support students in an LLC?

A: Families can encourage students to engage in LLC events, connect with faculty, and take advantage of the resources provided to enhance their experience.

Q: I still have questions... Whom should I reach out to?

A: We would love to tell you more about our LLC offerings! Contact Anderson Reeves (Assistant Director for Residential Curriculum) at (513) 745-3203 or reevesa7@xavier.edu.
