Note Taking Apps

There are a plethora of apps made to take notes. If you like to use a tablet, touchscreen, or stylus for note taking then you might want to explore a few of them. Students with accommodations using one of these methods will be required to sign an Audio Recording Agreement.

  • Mind Meister (iOS/Android): Mind mapping software for visual note taking.
  • MarginNote (iOS): App used to take notes in the margin of texts. They can be exported or linked into a web, if desired.
  • LiquidText (iOS/Windows): Note taking software which allows you to link your notes to text. You can also make links between multiple texts, adjust a single text in order to compare items within it, and share your notes with others. [Free-$10]
  • Squid (Android): Squid is a virtual pen and paper which can write on a blank canvas, pdf, or image using your stylus and finger.
  • Evernote (iOS/Windows/Android): Store, sort, search, and share your notes across multiple platforms-even if they’re handwritten.
  • SoundNote (iOS): In this app, you can type and draw notes while recording audio. When replaying the audio, you can choose to start either at the beginning or at a particular note.
  • Cogi (iOS/Android): 500 MB of free audio storage. You can record a few seconds at a time (when something important is said), or a full lecture. Transcription is also available for $2/min with a twenty-four-hour turnaround time, as well as other premium features.
  • Voice Record Pro (iOS/Android): Voice/Audio recording app offering transcription and export to almost any platform.
  • SimpleMind (iOS/Android): Create mind maps (or idea webs) easily with words, pictures, and emojis.

  • GoodNotes (iOS): This app functions similarly to OneNote. However, it does come with templates, and the recording option is always at the top of the screen. [~$8]
  • Otter (iOS/Android): Otter records your lecture or meeting (600 Minutes' worth of Recordings <40 Minutes each, per month) and transcribes them. Although it is free, you can upgrade for more time/space. It is also available on the computer.
