Stephen S. Smith Center

Smith Legal Success Project

The Smith Legal Success Project is an opportunity available to Smith Scholars interested in attending law school after their time at Xavier. This initiative is a further commitment from the Stephen S. Smith Center to the success of its students, even after they leave Xavier University.

Smith Scholars, through their study of the foundational texts of philosophy, history, and economics, develop essential skills such as critical thinking, collegiality, and cognitive flexibility, making them particularly well-suited for futures at law schools.

Participants are eligible to receive:

  • Up to $1,000 in financial assistance to be used for LSAT preparation materials
  • Invitations to various legally-related events and opportunities from the greater Xavier community
    • Past events have included: a sit-down with an incoming Harvard Law student and Xavier alumni, dinner with a commercial litigator, and Xavier alumni, who practices in the famous Delaware Chancery Court, attendance at the Notre Dame Hesburgh Lecture series with a Notre Dame law professor and the law school’s Director of the Program on Church, State, and Society
  • Access to an interview bank with answers from former Smith Scholars about their experiences with the Smith Legal Success Project and law school
  • Opportunities to contact former Smith Scholars now presently enrolled in law school
  • Advice and guidance from older students and classmates to help navigate your path to law school
    • Connections with individuals inside and outside of the Smith Center with similar career interests

Eligibility Requirements (subject to change):
  • A current Smith Scholar
  • A declared interest in pursuing law school by spring semester of junior year
  • Active participation in the project’s sponsored events
  • Good standing with the university
  • Completion of the provided interview by graduation to contribute to the knowledge of future participants
