Patrick presented the results of his research using an Ising model for the analysis of Sodium Cobsltate, Derek presented the results of his research on AtCry1 and its mutants, and Mario presented the results of his research using multiple spectroscopic techniques to simultaneously observe protein unfolding.

Xavier biophysics majors Daniella Patton received a Top 20 Presentation Award at the Summer Undergraduate Research Foundation (SURF) Final Capstone Poster Symposium. Daniella performed her research under Dr. Christy Holland, and investigated drug localization in atherosclerotic and non-atherosclerotic carotid arteries exposed to Ultrasound Mediated Drug Delivery (UMMD).

Physics major Laura Kaiser (second from right) presented her work completed at Purdue University on "Fluid Manipulation Utilizing Electrowetting Techniques" and was presented with the "Outstanding Presentation of Undergraduate Research Award" by the Society of Physics Students. Three students from the department of physics and biology presented their research at the 2013 March meeting of the American Physical Society held in Baltimore, Maryland. This international conference is the largest meeting of the year where over 9,000 physicists, scientists, and students attend to share groundbreaking research from industry, universities, and major labs all over the world. Biophysics major Jenna Graham presented her work with Dr. Justin Link on "Imaging the Genetic Code of a Virus." Biology student Ian Bentley presented his research with Dr. Justin Link and former biology alumni Jessica Stavole and Benjamin Opperman on "Developing a Novel, Interdisciplinary Approach to Study Protein Folding" and was recognized for outstanding work and presentation by the Society of Physics Student's "Outstanding Presentation of Undergraduate Research Award". Biophysics major Teckla Akinyi presented her work on "Single Molecule Study on the Direct Transfer of E. coli Single-Stranded Binding protein between Single-Stranded DNA Molecules," work she completed at the University of Illinois in the summer months. All three students represented Xavier University's Department of Physics and Biology extremely well and we look forward to continuing to support our students in their research endeavors.

Tim Horton presented the results of his research "Creating and Controlling an Array of Magnetic Nanowires using Magnetotactic Bacteria" at the 2012 Posters on the Hill meeting of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Tim was one of roughly 70 students (out of about 800 applicants) that was chosen to present at this prestigious meeting held each April at our nation's capital.

Physics major Peter Smith presented his work with Dr. Justin Link on "Computational and Electronic Analog Implementation of the Hodgkin-Huxley Model of Action Potentials in Neurons." Biology student Jessica Stavole presented her research with Dr. Justin Link and former biology alumni Benjamin Opperman on "Development of a Protocol to Study the Conformational Stability of Protein Using the Model Protein Cytochrome c." Both students represented Xavier University's Department of Physics and Biology extremely well and we look forward to continuing to support our students in their research endeavors.
