Your Support Means Students Stay in School and Help Others

Jun 2, 2020

From bringing the joy of Christmas to community children who wouldn’t otherwise have one, to donating toys and games to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, to serving as mentors for impoverished teens, Xavier has nearly two dozen philanthropic and service organizations that not only provide a community for students — they also help make the world a better place.

“Yes, some of our student organizations are more philanthropic in nature,” said Dustin Lewis, Xavier’s associate director for student involvement. “So a donation to that club or organization means you’re helping other groups in our community, too.”

But it also means you’re helping to keep students in school.

Xavier’s 19 philanthropic and service organizations also provide a friendly group, which help retain students in college — and 76 percent of Xavier’s student body participates in some kind of co-curricular activity.

“These kinds of groups make students feel more connected, like they’re part of a community,” Lewis said. “The organizations give students a sense of responsibility, a structure, and they require students to keep a certain high level of educational achievement. It all adds up to helping keep students in school.”

Lily Conrad is a senior at Xavier who serves as a team captain and an executive for MuskieTHON, a club that raises money and awareness to support the children and families receiving care at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

“We are a student-run philanthropic organization that raises funds and awareness for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, our local Children’s Miracle Network hospital,” Lily said. “Year-round, we host events for student engagement as well as fundraising for CCHMC. Events include a blacklight paint run, a fundraising push day, food fundraisers, etc. For any ticketed event, the ticket money goes directly to CCHMC.”

Lily said students are much more likely to stay at an institution if they feel a sense of belonging.

“MuskieTHON strives to be inclusive in all that we do, and I think we see this pay off as more and more students want to get involved every year,” she said. “By hosting unique events and creating a space for people from all walks of life to gather and connect, our hope is that MuskieTHON is the type of student organization that improves University retention.”
