About the Department
Xavier has had a major in Mathematics since 1916. In 2011, we introduced a major in Actuarial Science and in 2014, a major in the interdisciplinary program, Mathematics with concentration in Economics, while continuing the major in Mathematics with a minor in Professional Education. In addition, we offer minors in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. While our programs continue to evolve, our primary goal remains unchanged. We want to provide an educational environment in which students can develop their abilities to undertake intellectually demanding tasks in mathematics. All of our programs support Xavier's mission by emphasizing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the precise expression of ideas in spoken and written communication.
With introductory classes of sizes in the 20s and smaller upper level classes, individual attention and faculty support are readily available. Each student in our department receives individual academic advising from members of the department. The faculty believe that the best teaching can be done only when there is close faculty-student interaction for discussion, thinking, and exploring.
