University Initiatives

Xavier is committed to providing comprehensive, intersectional, culturally competent, evidence-based power and gender-based violence prevention education to students, faculty, and staff. We strive to meet each campus community member where they are and to help each person find their unique role in and power to prevent and respond to power and gender-based violence- to stand up, speak out, and be an active, engaged bystander. We know the most effective way to change beliefs, attitudes, and actions is to prioritize peer education and bystander engagement model and to integrate education, dialogue, and discernment on these issues into our student and employees’ experience at Xavier from start to finish in multiple dosages via multiple mediums. Here are just some of the ways we engage our community in this critical work:

Students

  • Incoming students complete a 2.5 hour interactive, dynamic power and gender-based violence prevention education course #LifeAtXU on the Road to Xavier
  • Information, dialogue, and resources on power and gender-based violence prevention and response is integrated into a student’s experience throughout their time at Xavier via various spaces/places they live, work and play- including, but not limited to in Manresa, the GOA course, First Year Seminar, Theology 111, courses spanning from English to Social Work to Physics to History, via theater performances with Talk Back sessions, Days of Dialogue, as resident hall residents, Club Sports participants, student athletes, Student Government Association, and more.

Employees

  • Incoming employees (and current employees as a refresher every 3 years) complete a 2.5 interactive, dynamic power and gender-based violence prevention education course, emphasizing employee role in supporting students impacted by these issues, reporting responsibilities, and best-practice response to students impacted by these issues.
  • It’s on X staff and student leaders engage employees throughout the year through in-person education focused on building on foundational knowledge and developing employee capacity as bystanders and resource connectors.
  • Select staff, faculty, and administrators receive a 60-minute Green Dot Green Dot is a nationally recognized, comprehensive primary prevention and bystander engagement program for universities with demonstrated outcomes of decreasing the likelihood of power and gender-based violence.
