Green Dot

"What's Your Green Dot?" logo

Green Dot is a nationally recognized, comprehensive primary prevention and bystander engagement program for universities and colleges with demonstrated outcomes of decreasing the likelihood of power and gender-based violence through equipping campus community members with the tools to recognize warning signs, develop intervention options, and proactively change norms.

A green dot is any behavior, choice, word, or attitude that promotes safety for our campus community and communicates utter intolerance for sexual assault, stalking, and intimate partner/dating violence. The goal is to engage in education and training that will equip us to integrate prevention within existing relationships and daily activities.

Primary Green Dot training objectives:

  • Provide manageable tools to support students, staff, and faculty in participating in prevention efforts within their spheres of influence.
  • Expose students, staff, and faculty to key messages during their formal and informal interactions with them.
  • Provide an overview of the Green Dot implementation plan with suggestions on how participants can support it.

Proactive Green Dots

  • Talk to your colleagues/friends about how you feel about violence on campus.
  • Post about Green Dot in your social media platforms.
  • Wear or display Green Dot swag (i.e. pins, posters, sweatshirts, etc.).
  • Organize a training on violence prevention for your department, organization, club, group, or team.
  • Check in with colleagues/friends if you are concerned about their safety and connect them with help.
  • Encourage your peers to attend a Green Dot training.

Reactive Green Dots

  • If someone discloses to me that they have been sexually assaulted, I will listen without judgement or assumptions and connect them to resources.
  • If I suspect my colleague/friend is in an abusive relationship, I will check in with him/her and provide resources and information.
  • If someone appears to be upset, I will ask if they are okay.
  • If I see a friend grab, push, or insult another person, I will say something, go get help, or get someone else to intervene.
  • If I notice a friend touching or grabbing a person that appears to be intoxicated, I will stop them and ask what is going on, or create a distraction to interrupt the situation.
  • If I hear someone yelling or fighting, I will call XUPD (x1000) or 911.

Green Dots for Faculty and Staff

  • Use your syllabus to communicate your values and commitment to violence prevention, active bystander behaviors, and support for survivors of violence.
  • Use your relationships and departmental or interdepartmental partnerships to discuss ways in which to support students as bystanders, support survivors, and improve safety for positive outcomes in the classroom.
  • Place a Green Dot on your office door so students know you support prevention and their efforts as bystanders.
  • Get to know the services available to students, staff, and faculty. This will help build your own confidence to offer help to students who may be experiencing violence.
  • Utilize the Green Dot Toolkit for Faculty
