Carrie Hawthorn

Crataegus × lavallei

Overview

The American Elm tree Carrie Hawthorn Tree grows to be around 20-30 feet in height. The tree itself is a hybrid between the female parent C. mexicana and the male parent thought to be C. calpodendronIt also possesses stout thorns and simple leaves that are roughly 2-4 inches long, serrated, and boast a very dark green coloration on the tops. As well as these characteristics, in late spring, white flowers slightly smaller than an inch will bloom. Following this, fruit that is brick red to orange-red speckled with brown will persist into winter usually contacting 2-3 nutlets per bundle.

Cultivation

Due to their thicker foliage, they make great hedge or foliage for gardens, needing partial or full sun to grow. Carrie Hawthorn can also grow on exposed soil or wet soil, making it rather adaptable. This tree usually needs little maintenance as well.

Biodiversity Sustained

The Carrie Hawthorn Tree attracts a lot of different wildlife with its thick foliage and berries. It is also uncommon for it to have any diseases, with only fungal leaf spots to worry about, but this will not cause the tree to die.
