Senior Spotlight: Sienna Glaze
April 17, 2024 |
Senior digital media and theatre major, Sienna Glaze, has felt right at home during her time at Xavier. During COVID and college decision time, Xavier made significant efforts to build a community, which attracted Sienna to attend. As a result, Sienna said she, “felt like an individual and more than just a number.”
Sienna always knew that she wanted to do something creative and had grown up participating in theatre and dance, leading to her decision to major in musical theatre. In addition to her passion for theatre, Sienna was also fond of design and considered a major in graphic design. She wanted something that would allow her to engage in analytical thinking and answer the “why” question of anything. In the end, she landed on digital media because she found that she could use her creativity and love of design and use it to answer questions about the broad range of social media that exists today.
While at Xavier, being part of the communications community has had a positive impact on her experience, and has led her to find joy in sharing classes with so many of the same people. Because of the tight-knit group, she was able to discover more about her strengths and weaknesses and grow through collaboration. Through the department, she has learned the key to patience and that “the best products take time, planning, and patience. The work is worth the end product.”
Sienna has found many benefits during her time in the theatre program that she has been able to apply to her studies in communication. Utilizing both the creative side of her brain in theatre and the analytical to design, she has been given a new perspective in taking these courses. Sienna shares that her communication and theatre majors work well together and says “theatre has inspired creativity in my comm work, specifically design wise, but I also think comm has allowed strategic thinking through my theatrical work.” The balance between the two degrees she explains is very manageable as long as the passion behind both degrees is there. Sienna says that “the passion behind both degrees is extremely important and my own personal drive and the support from many professors over my four years have really allowed me to feel successful going out into the world after graduation.”
Reflecting on her time here at Xavier, Sienna is grateful for the time management skills that she has gained in balancing classes, taking care of herself, and everything else life has to offer. She shares that she will miss the “automatic community college brings” with constantly being surrounded by people. “There’s always someone to talk to and everyone is in a very similar boat.”
Moving forward, Sienna plans on staying in Cincinnati after already building the first four years of her adult life in the area. Her hopes include applying herself somewhere in the theatre realm, and she shares, “I would love to dig my heels into a marketing or graphic design job, specifically relating to a company’s social media.”
The advice she shares for future digital media majors is to “take advantage of every opportunity you are given. Take elective classes and learn every angle your major has to offer. Give yourself grace and don’t be afraid to ask for help and guidance.”
