Pre-health options
Students who wish to study physics while preparing for medical, dental, or veterinary school can do so either through the biophysics program or the applied physics program. Both options can be tailored to align with the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges) newly established guidelines of minimum coursework required for MCAT preparation, which include 10 hours in Biology, 19 hours in Chemistry, 8 hours in Physics, 3 hours in Math, 3 hours in Intro. to Social Science, 3 hours in General Psychology. All of the MCAT requirements need to be completed before the student takes the test, usually during the second semester of their junior year.
In addition it is suggested that, if possible, Genetics (BIOL 230/231) be taken in order to be in line with the minimal competencies for entry to medical schools that are also established by AAMC. Some medical school programs also require a course in Anatomy (BIOL 354).
