Physics
Physics is the study of the Universe and how it works from the large scale to the sub-atomic scale. Physics is a way to understand the universe in which we all live and describe what we experience and what we encounter with diligence and rigor in the language of mathematics. The equations that we learn are not the starting point; they are the cumulating end point that physicists reach after having measured carefully and after having considered all logical conclusions. Of all natural sciences, this rigor in the thought process is most predominant in physics. Besides giving the satisfaction of grasping the inner workings of our universe, physics sharpens your logical thinking skills and your mathematical abilities. Since these are skills employers appreciate as well, physics bachelors can enter a large variety of careers.
Why Physics at Xavier?
The physics program at Xavier has small classes and provides a close interaction between faculty and students. The student lounge, which is located in the heart of the physics department, supports a strong sense of community among our students. This team spirit is further encouraged by various activities that our faculty facilitates throughout the first year. The research laboratories are equipped with state of the art technology, since all principal faculty members are active researchers. The core curriculum strengthens your communication skills (both in written and oral form), which are important criteria for employers as well, and thus rounds out your competencies. In short, Physics at Xavier offers:
- A strong community that encourages team work
- Active research laboratories that offer undergraduate research opportunities
- Physics in a liberal arts setting which strengthens logical and communicative skills alike
Career Options
Your career options with a bachelor degree in physics are countless. The physics education at Xavier prepares you well for a graduate study in physics at a research University. You are equally likely ready to continue your education at a law school or a business school. As a graduate from a very rigorous STEM field you can also directly enter the professional world and find a job in research laboratories or in financial business and many other areas. Our graduates have a high success rate of reaching their career goals when they graduate. Employers tell us that our graduates are unique because they combine the ability to think logically with the ability to communicate with others in a team oriented way. Career options include:
- Advanced degrees in physics, engineering or physics education
- Advanced degrees in Mathematics or Computer Science
- Laboratory technician
- Product manager
- Data analyst
