Steven Herbert

Dr. Steven Herbert earned his bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics from Xavier University in 1984. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1993 in experimental condensed matter physics under Dr. James Garland. He was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Cincinnati Department of Physics from 1993-1995 under Dr. Richard Newrock. He joined the physics faculty at Xavier in 1995.

Dr. Herbert's primary research area involves the electrical transport properties of materials with a specialization in conventional and high temperature superconductors. He also is interested in critical phenomena and phase transitions in two and three dimensional systems, scanning probe microscopy, Coulomb drag and spintronics. He is a member of the Midwest Manatee Research Project, an interdisciplinary group of Xavier faculty and students researching the vocalization patterns and behavior of the endangered Florida manatee.

With the little free time that he does have, Dr. Herbert enjoys reading, especially science fiction, playing softball and volleyball, hiking and backpacking, and spending time with his wife and four sons.
