Creating Activities for People with Dementia,
A Person Centered Approach

This workshop will focus on making materials and activities. Discovering programming that can be inexpensive, easy to make, and will allow people to engage in activities that promote self-esteem, build community, supports memory, and taps into their abilities and interests. Numerous materials, activities, and group projects will be explored, with demonstrations and hands-on opportunities.

Improving the Quality of Life for People with Dementia

Participants will discover the connection between the Montessori philosophy and the principles of two social gerontologists, Kitwood and Lawton. Understanding these theories of person centered care promotes best practices in providing care to people with dementia as well as providing a framework for developing activities.

Creating Meaningful and Purposeful Activities

Participants will learn a process to follow when creating activities for people with dementia. This process leads to ‘work’ that is meaningful, purposeful, and fulfills a person’s fundamental need for occupation, inclusion, while maintaining and improving their self-esteem. Many areas will be explored, including reading, music, and art.

Preparing the Environment forPeople Experiencing Memory Loss
Saturday, November 3, 2018 RESCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 10
This workshop focuses on discovering our fundamental need for independence, coordination, concentration and order and how to address it within the living environment as dementia progresses. Environmental adaptations, Montessori works that can be successfully used, adaptations of each, and ways to create meaningful work that supports independence, coordination, concentration, and order for an older person will be demonstrated and explored.
