Plan for Success
Make the most of your four years as a History major: every semester, you should attend a History Club event. Also, you should begin attending Career Services events in your first year at Xavier. We hope you will take advantage of all the opportunities the University and community have to offer. First Year
Fall Semester
- Attend "Pizzas with Professors" History event to learn about how to use Registrar's tools on the XU portal to track and plan your degree progress
- Make a habit of reading the Student Weekly and announcements every day to find out what's going on around campus
- If you are interested in Secondary Education, contact the School of Education
- If you are interested in Pre-Law, contact the Director of the Pre-Law Program
Spring Semester
- Visit the Career Development Office (CLC 530) to learn about career options and planning
- Attend at least one campus speaker event or cultural activity
- Talk to your advisor about study abroad
- Ask your advisor for suggestions for summer reading based on her/his current reading
Sophomore Year
Fall Semester
- Consider declaring a minor
- Contact the Career Development Office (CLC 530)
- Talk to your advisor about graduate school and preparing for the GREs, LSAT, etc.
Spring Semester
- Contact Career Development Office (CLC 530)
- Attend the Career Fair
- Consider doing an internship
- Talk to your advisor about study abroad
- Ask your advisor for suggestions for summer reading based on her/his current reading
Junior Year
Fall Semester
- Discuss Fulbright and other postgraduate opportunities with your advisor
- Consider doing an internship
- Contact the Career Development Office (CLC 530)
- Set up a Linked-In account for professional networking
- Consider submitting research to Xavier's Celebration of Student Research
Spring Semester
- Talk to your advisor about graduate school and preparing for the GREs, LSAT, etc.
- Attend the Career Fair
- Contact the Career Development Office (CLC 530)
- Attend at least one campus speaker event or cultural activity (see reverse for ideas)
- Update your résumé
Senior Year
Fall Semester
- Attend the Career Fair
- Ask professors for letters of recommendation for graduate school or employment
- Consider volunteering to staff the History major table with a professor at an X-Experience day (contact Dept. Chair)
Spring Semester
- Consider volunteering to staff the History major table with a professor at an X-Experience day (contact Dept. Chair)
- Update your résumé
- Take career-enhancing electives from other departments (Communication, Entrepreneurial Studies, etc.)
