Information for Faculty and Staff Working with Students in Distress
Counseling Services is very happy to partner with Xavier Faculty and Staff in working with students in need of our services. Often times faculty and staff are not sure about how to properly assess what type of appointment is best for the student. Please review this resource for guidance. If an appointment is indicated, we encourage faculty and staff to complete a "warm hand-off" to Counseling Services. Warm hand-offs are utilized to help ease the added stress for a student who may not otherwise contact Counseling Services on their own. This can be done in the following steps.
- With the consent of the student, and the student present in your office, call 513-745-3022, option 2, to be connected to Counseling Services.
- Inform operator who you are by name and introduce the student with whom you are currently working. (At this point it may be best to have your phone on speaker so that questions may be directed to the student in your presence.)
- Without going into major detail, simply state that the two of you discussed that it may be best for this student to be scheduled for an appointment. The phone operator will then ask the questions needed to determine the urgency of the need, and the appointment will be scheduled accordingly.
