Immersion Experiences

Xavier's Vision Statement forecasts that "Xavier men and women become people of learning and reflection, integrity and achievement, in solidarity for and with others." The Strategic Plan asks that 100% of students have an immersion experience. This FLC will support faculty and staff in describing current and future immersion opportunities at Xavier. The questioning of what we mean by immersion here at Xavier will be a key, early consideration of the FLC. Additionally, participants will explore how an immersion experience can be an integrated, transformative experience instead of a requirement to check off. Pre-immersion, immersion and post-immersion topics will be explored through literature review, expert input, discussion and collaboration. Topics include connecting immersion to course work, the preferential option for the poor, technology and emerging media, solidarity, the continuum of linked or deepening experiences, and the role of reflection in formation and transformation. Finally, individual member projects will be related to furthering awareness of these topics across the university, identifying and enhancing existing immersion opportunities, and/or designing new immersion experiences, including those that may transform individual classrooms.
