Karla Helton
Academic Advisor
I received my undergraduate degree from Northern Kentucky University in Psychology; and went on to work with at-risk youth in non-profit agencies in both Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati for several years. I then transitioned to working with adult populations in workforce development, also through a non-profit organization in Northern Kentucky.
In 2015 I began my journey in Higher Education after joining Xavier’s Office of Disability Services and Office of Academic Support. In January of 2020, after receiving my Master’s in HRD here at Xavier, I transitioned to the Student Success Team and began working with primarily 1st and 2nd year nursing students. In this position I helped students transition to college and navigate the university successfully. I most recently accepted a position as an Academic Advisor with the College of Nursing that will allow me to continue my work with students and offers me a step up in responsibility.
Outside of work I enjoy listening to live music [my favorite is the Blues genre] and watching live sports (Xavier Men’s and Women’s sports, along with the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.] I enjoy attending signature concert venues, area parks [especially the Loveland Bike Trail and Smales Park], walking next to the Ohio river, and visiting the area museums and other venues like the Freedom Center, the Art Museum, the Krohn Conservatory, Union Terminal, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Zoo, the Observatory and the Aquarium.
2023 is my Fourth academic year teaching GOA and being a part of the Aspiring Anti-Racists Allies [AARA] on campus; and my first year being part of a Faculty Learning Community studying Universal Design for Learning in the classroom.
I am also an animal enthusiast and have on my bucket list to be friends with a baby elephant one day.
