We value the unique rewards of a wide variety of study abroad experiences. Classics and Modern Languages faculty offer a variety of programs throughout the year to help widen students' perspectives through cultural immersion and exploration. Berlin

The Xavier in Berlin program immerses students in the capital of Germany for two-weeks. Students will earn 3-6 credits hours exploring historical sites, memorials, museums, and cultural and political institutions and considering what they tell us about power and politics in Germany and in Europe today.

Study Abroad in Berlin

Colombia

This immersion program is a collaboration with professors and students at the Jesuit University Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali, Colombia. Students will enroll in Spanish 362 Language and Culture in Colombia, Spanish 302 Spanish Conversation, and Creative Arts in Colombia. This program will include academic collaborations among the students and professors. The objective of the program is to develop language proficiency and intercultural competence through engagement with authentic culture and native speakers in Colombia.

Experiential learning opportunities will include excursions to cultural sites, service learning and conversations with Universidad Javeriana students, travel to the coffee region and the Amazon, and classes in cooking, dance, music, theatre and sports.

Study Abroad in Columbia

Greece

The Greece 2024 Summer Study Abroad Program is tentatively scheduled for May 20 (departure) - June 17 (return). Students earn 6 credit hours from a range of core CLAS courses that satisfy Creative Perspectives, Historical Perspectives, E/RS and Diversity Flags, and Humanities.

The program is open to students in all four colleges and all majors. Most courses are available for Honors upgrade.

Guatemala

The language and cultural immersion emphasizes engagement with Guatemalans from all walks of life, with particular emphasis on indigenous communities, their practices and perspectives. Peace and justice, food justice, and sustainability are additional topics of focus. Students will engage in activities involving social justice issues in such towns as Chichicastenango, Santiago Atitlan, Panajachel, and Antigua.

Rome

The Summer Program in Rome is a five-week long international experience that combines six credits of academic work with cultural excursions both in Rome and beyond. The first group of nine students studied in Rome in the summer of 1997. Typically, the summer group averages around 35 to 40 students.

Study Abroad in Rome

Spain

The 2024 Xavier Summer Program in Spain will offer three- or six-week residential experiences based in Comillas, a historic village on the rugged northern coast in the province of Cantabria. Students will be able to earn up to twelve credits with courses in Spanish language, Spanish culture, Theology, Art, and International Business. Courses offered will fulfill requirements in the Xavier Spanish major or minor or in the university core curriculum, as applicable.
