Skills the liberal arts provide

As fall recruiting season approaches, our student appointments in the Career Development Office often focus on a common theme: how can I stand out when speaking with recruiters at events like the Career Fair? Fortunately, we are experts in guiding and supporting students as they learn to effectively showcase their value to employers.

Students at liberal arts institutions like Xavier develop many skills that are highly attractive to employers. We often highlight skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal communication, cultural awareness, and a global perspective. Liberal arts coursework challenges students to think critically, even in classes that might not immediately capture their interest. This experience broadens their appreciation for diverse topics and viewpoints, leading to increased confidence and self-awareness.

Research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) consistently shows that employers are looking for the very skills that a liberal arts education provides (Fig. 1). This underscores the strength of a liberal arts background in preparing students for success in the workforce. At Xavier, students develop these valuable skills, but some may find it challenging to communicate their strengths in a way that stands out to employers. That’s where we come in. The Career Development Office (along with our campus partners), is dedicated to helping our students shine. We’re here to encourage them and boost their confidence, and make employer engagement approachable and fruitful.

One-to-one student appointments are made via the online scheduling program "Handshake." Please encourage your students to come see us to prepare for upcoming campus events including the Inclusive Networking Event on Sept. 5, and the Fall Career Fair on Sept. 11. Extended drop-ins for Career Fair preparation are available Sept. 3-6, 1-5 pm, and Sept. 9-10, 10 am- 12 pm and 1-5 pm in CLC 530.
