Preparing students to protect systems, data, and infrastructure
February 13, 2025
The Computer Science Department is excited to talk about our Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. Cybersecurity continuously changes, which keeps it interesting but also challenging in a rewarding way. Cybersecurity needs a skilled workforce, and our program is the place to become a part of it.Addressing the Cybersecurity Workforce Gap
With over 12,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in Ohio alone , the demand for trained professionals has never been greater. As someone passionate about cybersecurity for over a decade, I’m excited that we can train and empower the next generation to protect critical systems, data, and infrastructure from cyber threats.
A Strong Foundation in Cybersecurity
For five years, Xavier has offered a Cybersecurity concentration within our Computer Science program, building a strong educational foundation. Three years ago, we achieved the NSA Center for Academic Excellence designation, validating that our curriculum meets industry and government standards. With cyber threats evolving rapidly, our new cybersecurity degree expands on this foundation to prepare students for the ever-changing landscape.
What Makes This Program Unique?
Our program integrates Xavier’s Core Curriculum with computer science fundamentals and specialized cybersecurity training, including:
- Reverse engineering
- Malware analysis
- Offensive and defensive security
- Security analysis
Students can pursue careers in offensive security (Red Team), defensive security (Blue Team), cybersecurity research, and security operations. Small class sizes ensure personalized instruction, giving students an edge over larger programs in the region.
Hands-On Learning & Competitions
Real-world experience is central to cybersecurity education. Our Cyber Defense Team competes nationally in cybersecurity competitions, where students apply what they learn in the classroom to solve real-world security challenges. Last year, our team placed among the top competitors nationwide.
A Mission-Driven Approach
Guided by Jesuit values, Xavier’s cybersecurity program is about more than just technology—it’s about protecting individuals, businesses, and national security. With 33 percent job growth expected by 2033, our graduates will enter a field with rewarding careers while making a meaningful impact.
