All for one

The college's highest priority this year is to support our students to flourish. The relationships they build with their faculty advisors and success coaches will be critical for that.Priority registration for the spring semester begins the week of November 7, and many of us will be busy between now and then advising students.
This year you've got more help than ever.
This is the final week of Goa this fall, during which all first-year students are becoming familiar with Degree Works and finding classes. That will be reinforced in Pre-Advising Sessions over the next week. Hosted by the Student Success Center, these sessions will walk students through Degree Works, searching for classes, and the entire registration process.
All this is intended allow faculty advisors to have more in-depth conversations with students beyond the mechanics of class scheduling.
What can you do to prepare for advising? Start by communicating your availability to your advisees. I hear time and again from the college's Student Advisory Board about this. It's time to move beyond those sign-up sheets taped to your office doors.
One easy way? Use EAB Navigate. This system allows you to schedule appointments and take notes on any advising conversations. You'll also be able to see any academic alerts your advisees may have received.
The new Academic Advising Committee has additional tips for even the most experienced advisors. We'll include their suggestions in the CAS Bulletin over the next several weeks.
