Reckoning together

Yesterday I was reminded — and cheered — by the return of something I hadn't realized how much I've missed since the start of the pandemic: a thought-provoking lecture by a visiting scholar to an engaged audience of students, faculty & staff.

And we were all sharing the same physical space!

Dr. Elliot Ratzman of Earlham College invited us to consider thorny questions of identity, religion, history, race, and power in his presentation: "Jews Reckoning with Race: From the Bible to Black Lives Matter."

Erudite. Provocative. Informative. Controversial. Timely.

In other words, the presentation and subsequent discussion exemplified the principle of
Ignatian Campus Speech.

Thanks to the leaders of the Jewish Studies Program, the Dorothy Day Center, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion for sponsoring this welcome contribution to our university's intellectual life.
