College Statement on Advising
The College of Arts and Sciences expects that all advisors will
- Communicate availability to advisees, department admin, and/or other relevant people
- Empower advisees to take primary responsibility for their own academic planning
- Keep regular office hours during academic semesters
- Assist students with scheduling
- Meet in person or virtually with each advisee at least once per semester
- Respond to advisee emails in a timely manner (generally, within 2 days during the semester)
- Effectively use Xavier’s advising systems (Degree Works, EAB/Navigate, etc.)
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of Xavier’s Student Success Coaching model
- Be familiar with graduation requirements and check degree progress of advisees each semester; communicate degree progress with advisees
- Familiarize themselves with common double majors and/or minor combinations within their program
- Communicate options and strategies to students at risk of/ who earn DFW
- Complete advisor training about core curriculum and major, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act and other relevant legal guidelines
- Be open to discussions of non-academic concerns
- Connect students to relevant campus or community resources
- Discuss vocational formation and career planning with advisees
- Proactively suggest service and community-engagement, study abroad, internships, shadowing, professional memberships (as appropriate)
- Participate in regular ongoing professional development in advising including topics around inclusion and equity issues in advising
