Certificate in Biomedical Sciences
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Medical
This certificate program is designed for students who are not seeking a degree, but who want to prepare for admission to medical school. Medical schools generally expect their applicants to have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree along with the four years of science courses required for this certificate.
Thirty-seven total credit hours are required. A student is eligible for a certificate if at least one half (18 credit hours) of the courses are completed at Xavier University with a minimum grade point average of 3.000. Interested students should consult with the chair of the Health Sciences Committee or the Coordinator of Pre-Professional Health Advising.
The required courses are:
- General Biology I and II (BIOL 160-163): 10 credit hours
- College Physics I and II (PHYS 160-163): 8 credit hours
- General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 160-163): 8 credit hours
- Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 240-243): 8 credit hours
- Biochemistry (BIOL 440 or CHEM 440): 3 credit hours
Most medical schools also require undergraduate courses in Calculus, Psychology, Sociology and English composition for admission.
