She received a B.S. in biology from Trinity University in 1993, and her Ph.D. in cell biology from Duke University in 2000. Dr. Balyeat's thesis research focused on the role of sphingolipids in apoptosis, and other research has included Drosophila development and the role of inflammation in ovulation.
Dr. Balyeat loves to teach and share her enthusiasm for biology. She has a particular passion for teaching students to think critically. Beyond science, she enjoys long road trips with her family, and likes hiking, gardening, cooking, and kayaking. After growing up on a Texas cattle ranch, even after ten years in Ohio, snow is still a pleasant surprise.
