Topical Biodiversity in Costa Rica

Xavier University is proud to offer a 2-week course in Costa Rica. This intensive 3-credit hour field course will give you hands-on experience in tropical ecosystems and will teach you the fundamentals of tropical biology and conservation. The course will be conducted on both coasts of Costa Rica, giving students opportunities to explore both Atlantic and Pacific rainforest. We will visit an array of diverse ecosystems including tropical rainforest, intertidal and marine habitats, as well as an organic cacao plantation and other agricultural ecosystems.

Courses

BIOL 255 (for science majors) - 3 hours
BIOL 122-3 (for non-majors) - 3 hours
Pre-requisites: none
Core: Tropical Biodiversity satisfies three credit hours of the core science requirement.

Accommodations

First part of program: Bijagual Ecological Reserve located in the dense rainforest of Sarapiqui.
Second part of program: Beach-front tent cabinas in a rustic seaside research and education center on the Osa Peninsula, near the coastal city of Puerto Jimenez.

Cost

Program fee estimate: $2800 (includes all in-country transportation, admission fees, room and board, and three credit hours tuition)
Application fee: $50 (refundable only if student is not admitted to the program)
Personal expenses: varies by student (passport, souvenirs, miscellaneous, visa if needed)
