Program Details

One of the fastest-growing career fields in the country involves the advertising and promotion of sports, and Xavier's location in Cincinnati, Ohio centers you in the middle of a spirited, sports-crazy community.

As a student in the sport marketing major, you’ll learn the skills it takes to bring fans together through courses in public relations, advertising, digital media and more. Students in the sport marketing major participate in field experiences at regional organizations, gaining the professional skills needed to succeed after graduation. Graduates of the sport marketing major have gone on to work for the Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds, Major League Soccer and more.

Facility and Event Management (SPMG 322) - Planning and managing athletic, physical education, recreation and other sport facilities. Basic concerns in developing and organizing events in sports areas.

History of American Sport (SPMG 195) - The course provides an overview of the history, as well as the social, political, cultural, technological and economic trends that have shaped the sport industry in the United States. Particular emphasis is placed on the period from 1800 to the present.

Sociology of Sport (SPMG 132) - Impact of sport on society. The social structures. The integration of sport with other social institutions.

Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport (SPMG 348) - Basic legal principles affecting the management of physical activity and sports programs. Liability, negligence and risk assessment.

Sport Marketing (SPMG 310) – Course explores marketing plans, current trends, sponsorships, event fundraising, public relations, promotions using the marketing mix applied to the sport industry.

Sport Ethics (SPMG 410) – Course is designed to provide an examination and discussion of ethical, managerial, and moral issues related to individuals who work and participate in the area of sport and physical activity.

The Sports Business Club provides networking opportunities for students interested in a career in sports through meetings, social events and guest speaker events. The club's goal is to give insight, opportunities and experiences to prepare members to excel in the sport business industry.

Learn about basic legal and ethical principles affecting physical activity and sports programs including liability, negligence, and risk assessment through several courses in the four-year curriculum, such as Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport, and Business Law.

Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon, whose board includes a Xavier professor, was recently named one of the top 20 international marathons by Runner’s World magazine. Help manage the event each May with other students in the sport marketing major.

Walk to the new Recreation Center in the Health United Building to swim in the indoor pool, play basketball on multiple courts, run in the cardio room or on the elevated track, and build muscle in the weight training room. Stop by the café for a healthy snack before heading back to class or home.

Sport Marketing Major at Xavier University

Graduates of Xavier University's Sport Marketing program earn a Bachelor of Science in Sport Marketing and go on to work in a variety of sport or sport-related settings, including with professional sports teams but also in many other exciting settings. Recent graduates are employed in intercollegiate athletics, specialized sport management and marketing firms, high school athletic administration and commercial sport, as well as with traditional businesses.
