Xavier awarded over $1 million to support STEM students
Choose Ohio First Scholarship designed to develop STEM talent throughout the state

Xavier University will receive more than $1 million in grant funding through the Choose Ohio First Scholarship, awarded annually to incoming first-year students majoring in STEM fields.
The $1,085,603.96 award from the Ohio Department of Higher Education for Fiscal Year 2024 will support Xavier students and teachers in fields ranging from environmental science to nursing to information systems. A full list of Xavier academic areas covered through the scholarship is available on the Choose Ohio First website.
“These Choose Ohio First awardees, including Xavier University, represent Ohio's best when it comes to preparing STEM scholars for success in the workforce," Chancellor Randy Gardner said. "I commend Xavier for its efforts in the Choose Ohio First program and for being among this latest group of deserving awardees."
Designed to significantly strengthen Ohio’s competitiveness within STEM disciplines and to increase the number of STEM teachers, the program supports students desiring a certificate, associate degree, baccalaureate degree, or graduate degree in eligible STEM fields or to students who want to become STEM teachers.
Designated Choose Ohio First programs, including Xavier’s, are integrated with regional economies, meet statewide educational needs, facilitate the completion of certificates, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and graduate degrees in a cost-effective manner, and recruit underrepresented STEM student groups including women and students of color.
Choose Ohio First funds higher education and business collaborations that will have the most impact on Ohio’s position in world markets such as aerospace, medicine, and information technology. These collaborations will ultimately produce substantive improvements to the pipeline of STEM graduates and STEM educators in Ohio. Choose Ohio First is part of a strategic effort to encourage Ohio’s economic strength by ensuring a ready workforce for STEM-related industries.
