Xavier’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program Awarded 10-Year Reaccreditation
Oct 10, 2022
On the 25th anniversary of its founding, Xavier University’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral (PsyD) program received a 10-year reaccreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA), the maximum length given by the association.Established in 1997, the PsyD program was the first doctoral degree offered at Xavier and remains rooted in the University’s strong commitment to service for others. The full-time, five-year program equips scholars with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide psychological services in today’s complex professional climate and has graduated 326 students who have gone on to succeed in clinical, academic and administrative positions across the United States.
“We are thrilled to begin our next 10 years as an accredited program,” Susan Kenford, PhD, the PsyD program’s director of clinical training. “Our success as a program is due to the excellence of our faculty and students. As director of clinical training, I see firsthand the quality of our graduates and am both pleased and proud to claim them as products of Xavier.”
Xavier’s PsyD program has been continuously accredited by the APA since 2001, engaging in ongoing review and quality improvement. Accreditation is vital to the well-being of the public, as it ensures programs meet nationally accepted standards that produce graduates ready to provide exceptional clinical psychological service — standards that include a record of sustained excellence, low faculty-student ratios and high licensure rates.
To sustain its accreditation, the PsyD program partook in an intensive self-study and site visit completed by the APA Commission on Accreditation, which evaluated the program in accordance with published criteria and procedures. By receiving the 10-year term, Xavier reaffirmed its ability to prepare graduates for evidence-based practice centered around improved well-being and anchored in Jesuit values.
