Mission Animators: Economic Justice (2017-2018)

Mission Animators

Current levels of production are sufficient, yet millions of people are still suffering and dying of starvation. This... is truly scandalous. A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth, and not simply to close the gap between the affluent and those who must be satisfied with the crumbs falling from the table, but above all to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being- Pope Francis

In support of the Xavier Way, Fr. Graham SJ has asked the heads of certain centers and academic programs (Mission Animators) to come together to create more integrated programming across the campus. To do so, the group has chosen the theme economic justice (broadly understood) for the 2017-2018 academic year. With a generous gift from an anonymous Xavier supporter, proposals for projects and activities spotlighting this human justice issue are sought.

PROPOSALS - are invited from students, faculty, and staff for projects taking place during the academic year of 2017-2018 on the topic of economic justice and related issues (see below). The goal is to fund a variety of projects that are imaginative and engage broadly the Xavier community and may include the general public. We are able to fund proposals between $500-5000.

Preference is given to projects that will reach a number of students, faculty, staff and community members. Projects are not limited to, but may include, on campus events (public talks, panels, information sessions, film screenings), community-engagement, and service learning. We are not looking to fund scholarship projects, but projects connected to scholarship are welcomed. Since funds are limited, collaborative projects and shared/supplementary funding is encouraged.

While economic justice (see the resources page) is the theme, we intend for it be an inclusive theme that can be connected to class, race, gender, equality, "free" markets, community development, health, sustainability, neighborhood development, equity, poverty, the greater good, to name only a handful of possible topics.

The 1-page proposal must include:

  • a 1-2 sentence abstract
  • a project description
  • a detailed budget
  • a budget number and the name of the budget administrator should the proposal be funded

Proposals should be sent to mission-identity@xavier.edu with "Economic Justice" in the subject line by May 15, 2017.

Questions may be directed to any of the group members: Elizabeth Blume, James Buchanan, Greg Carpinello, Cindy Daumeyer, Art Dewey, Gabe Gottlieb, Abie Ingber, Debra Mooney, Niamh O'Leary, Sean Rhiney, Taj Smith, Janice Walker
