Our MHSA is one of only seven programs in the country that requires a third-year administrative residency for full-time students, which equips you to take on leadership roles and make an impact in the health services field.

Admission

Xavier’s full-time MHSA program begins each August and utilizes a cohort structure of 28 students or less to facilitate collaboration and build an immersive learning environment. Our admissions committee strives to understand applicants holistically and consider each prospective student and their ability to complete our intensive graduate program.

Our part-time Executive MHSA begins each August & January each year, and gathers experienced healthcare professionals who are interested advancing their careers. We limit each admit term to 20 new students and structure the program with the freedom to choose the path that best suits your life/work needs. Most Executive MHSA students complete the program in about three years, but have the option of completing it in 2-5 years. 

A brief outline of deadlines is below. Comprehensive information is available on the MHSA Admissions & Info Session Page. Late applicants may be placed on a waitlist or may opt to be deferred to the next available start term. The full-time MHSA & MHSA/MBA Dual Degree program admits each Fall. The part-time Executive MHSA admits each Fall & Spring. 

  • SPRING 2025: 
    • Part-time Executive MHSA:
      • Priority Deadline: November 1, 2024 - Admitted students whose materials are in by November 1 and meet qualifying criteria (min. 3.5 GPA and/or 5+ years clinical or healthcare ops experience) will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the Spring 2025 semester 
      • Final Deadline: December 1, 2024
  • FALL 2025: 
    • Full-time MHSA & MHSA/MBA Dual Degree
      • Priority Funding Deadline: December 1, 2024. Admitted students whose materials are in by December 1 and complete their intervirew by January 10, 2025 will receive the guaranteed min. $8,000 funding as well as applications for Supplemental Scholarships. 
      • Final Deadline: June 1, 2025
    • Part-time Executive MHSA: August 1, 2025

Curriculum

The Master of Health Services Administration curriculum supports your development as a skilled, values-oriented leader by instilling strong strategic instincts, honing managerial practices and helping you continuously improve the management of health-related organizations.

With an interdisciplinary approach, our coursework covers the broad spectrum of health services administration skills. You learn about the health services industry's economics and finances, advanced healthcare management concepts, strategic decision-making, and healthcare policy and ethics. Additionally, you undergo essential professional development courses to fine-tune your ability to navigate the competitive and ever-changing healthcare industry.

Once you’ve completed your coursework, you embark on a third-year residency program, empowering you to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical application. Your year-long residency plays an integral role in advancing your expertise and is a distinguishing component of your graduate education.

  • HESA 572 - Healthcare Services in the U.S. - Past and Future: This course provides a historical perspective on the development of healthcare services in the United States, including the key factors and issues that influence the development of the current healthcare delivery systems and how these delivery systems function.
  • HESA 579 - Health Policy & Policy Analysis: Receive a comprehensive overview of health policy in the United States. Additionally, learn both qualitative and quantitative methods for analyzing health policy with attention given to the political and economic perspectives on health policy questions.
  • HESA 583 - Ethical Issues in Healthcare: In this course, you study the dominant ethical theories and principles, as well as current ethical issues in healthcare. These issues include professional, clinical, social, business and organizational challenges. It also provides you with the opportunity to formulate an ethical position related to these issues.
  • HESA 720 - Institution & Community Analysis: Gain firsthand, in-depth skills in analyzing the internal operations of a healthcare institution, including governance, departmental structure, planning and financial management, and human resources development, as well as the external environments impacting the organization.

All full-time MHSA students participate in an administrative residency or fellowship for eight to 12 months.
