Academics
Students at Xavier’s Lab School will experience research-based and innovative curriculum that is individualized to meet each child’s unique learning profile. With an emphasis on the development of the whole child, students will be immersed in the core content areas of reading language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Additionally, students will experience Catholic teachings throughout their school week. Experiential learning in all content areas will be a focus of the lab school, with students developing skills as critical thinkers and problem-solvers.
As a school that is part of a Jesuit Catholic University, we emphasize academic rigor and spiritual formation.
Like Xavier University, the XULS will be guided by Ignatian Pedagogy, which is a model that seeks to develop students of competence and compassion. It is based on five educational principles:
- Context - understanding student life and culture
- Experience - providing intellectual and affective learning opportunities
- Reflection - of meaning for self and others
- Action - the external expression of learned content
- Evaluation - of student growth
The XULS will place a particular emphasis on elements of Ignatian Pedagogy that:
- Embrace the unique qualities in each student
- Encourage student responsibility and independence
- Emphasize eloquentia perfeta – speaking and writing
- Are interdisciplinary
- Facilitate students’ understanding of information in a personal, relevant, and appropriate manner

Extended Care
XULS families will have a before and after school care option. The XULS extended care program, licensed by the Ohio Department of Education's Early Childhood Division, is led by a licensed teacher serving as the Extended Care Coordinator. Assisted by college students enrolled in the Primary (P-5) and Special Education Teacher Education Program, the program offers a diverse range of age-appropriate activities for children, all conducted on Xavier University premises.
