What brought you to ISSJ?
I came to Xavier looking for conversation partners. In midlife, I developed a new interest in theology, and I wanted a place where I could take my studies seriously. Initially I was concerned that, as an older student, and as a lifelong protestant with a secular education and a prior career in medicine, I would not be welcome at Xavier. The opposite has been true. I have found that both faculty and students have been patient and welcoming, and that my unique background has been valued. Xavier is a place where varied viewpoints and experiences are welcome. As a result, the ISSJ provides a wonderful learning environment.
What impact has your studies with ISSJ had on you?
I have found the diversity of both courses and faculty to provide many opportunities for learning. The faculty have a wide array of interests and expertise, from scriptural studies, church history, and ethics, to contemporary social justice issues. The small class sizes allow for ample opportunity to interact directly with faculty, as well as fellow graduate students. My interactions with my classmates have been gratifying. In general, I have found the classes to provide the perfect amount of challenge. The volume of reading and assignments strike the balance I was seeking. There is enough material to learn many new concepts, yet I have not been overwhelmed by the course load. I highly recommend the program at Xavier and would choose the program again without hesitation.
