About Peru

Peru has been chosen as a new study abroad site due to the country's rich linguistic and cultural diversity and the significance of its historical and archeological sites. Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The NWTO (World Tourism Organization Network) recently awarded Peru the world's number one culinary destination, much attributed to the diversity of cultures and their rich seasonings.

Peru has 28 of the World's 32 microclimates. Its landscape is just as diverse as its people. Cuzco is the capital of the Incan Empire, one of the largest indigenous empires known to humans. This empire stretched from the southern-most tip of South America to the base of Central America. The Incan civilization's stonework, calendar conceptions, and medicine were far beyond their time, and, in many ways (particularly with stonework), rival modern-day capabilities.

The country and its historical, cultural, and linguistic diversity prove to be the ideal setting in which to integrate all aspects of a study abroad program: linguistic development, historical and cultural studies, service learning, and multicultural children's and adolescent literature.
