Classics and Modern Languages

Francis Flanagan

My name is Francis Flanagan, HAB grad 2012. Shortly after graduation, I moved to Busan, South Korea, on the south-eastern tip of the peninsula; Busan is the second largest city in Korea with a population of around 3.5 million. Since moving here, I have taught at two different private language academies. The first one was teaching English to children ranging from elementary to early high school after their regular days of classes had already been completed. At that school I taught Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing classes. When that school closed in April 2013 (I promise I had nothing to do with that), I took a job at an academy named My Language School, which offers not only English classes, but also other languages such as Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, French, Italian. I currently teach conversational English to university students and adults.

On top of my work day, I also have been taking private Korean language lessons from a tutor. I have not become fluent by any means, but I hope to become fluent one day. I cannot escape the languages in my life.

As far as HAB is concerned, I loved my experience in the program. I loved all of my professors and they have left an indelible mark on my life. I shared so many wonderful experiences from all of the interesting classes and seminars to Eta Sigma Phi meetings and especially the Greece trip in 2010. I regret nothing about the program and I would absolutely do it again given the opportunity. In addition to the Honors Bachelor of Arts, I also received a minor in Philosophy.
