Procedures for Nomination and Selection


The humanities, namely the disciplines represented by the departments of Classics and Modern Languages, English, History, Philosophy, and Theology, figure prominently in the core curriculum of Xavier University and in the academic life of the community. The teacher-scholars in the humanities play a unique and important role in the fulfillment of Xavier's mission of engaging students intellectually, morally, and spiritually and in the intellectual life of the University.

Description of award

The Roger A. Fortin Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship in the Humanities was established and endowed to recognize "a teacher-scholar who, in the judgment of students and peers, is excellent to outstanding in her or his teaching and, in the judgment of the faculty, shows evidence of scholarship that is recognized and given positive evaluations by the scholarly community." The award winner will receive $13,000 and be recognized at a public ceremony in the spring semester.

Eligibility

Tenured faculty members in the humanities departments listed above are eligible.

Selection committee

Each year the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will form a committee of four faculty, at least three representing disciplines in the humanities, and one student majoring in a humanities discipline. The Dean will appoint a substitute in the event a committee member is nominated.

Nominations

Any Xavier University department chair, faculty member, or current or recent student may nominate an eligible faculty member. Nominations for the 2025 award will open in November 2024 and are due December 13, 2024.

Application Process

Nominees will be contacted and offered the opportunity to submit specific materials that provide evidence of teaching that is excellent to outstanding in the judgment of students and peers and of scholarship that is recognized and given positive evaluations by the scholarly community.

The application materials must be submitted electronically to the office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences by January 24, 2025, to be considered.

Award Selection

The committee members shall consider all submissions with the supporting evidence and recommend one faculty member to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Dean will confer the award and communicate the result to the Provost and to the recipient. The recipient will be recognized at a public ceremony in the spring semester. The 2025 award ceremony will take place in March 2025.
