Advising season

It’s almost advising season! Good quality advising is key to our students’ success both here at Xavier and beyond. It’s a way for us to connect with our students, check in with them, and make sure that they’re on the right track with their coursework and plans for after graduation. Advising for spring 2024 begins Monday, October 14, and here are a few things to keep in mind as we move into this important time of the year:

It is expected that every student meets with their advisor at least once a semester. This ensures that students know who their advisor is, get timely advice, and helps foster a relationship in case the student needs help outside of the advising period.

EAB Navigate can be a useful tool for scheduling your advising appointments. You can set up a campaign that syncs to your Outlook calendar. After that, you can send an automated email to students prompting them to follow a link and schedule appointments. You may also set further ‘nudges’ to encourage students to schedule and show up to their appointments. You can find resources here for using EAB more effectively.

Speaking of EAB Navigate, remember to upload your notes from your advising meetings to this platform. This allows faculty, the success coaches, and others in the students advising team to see them. It also creates a record of what the student was told when in case of a disagreement.

Do you need a refresher on the Core? Advising on the Core can be challenging, but is an important component of any advising meeting. You can find lots of great resources on how to speak about the Core, what is required, lists of classes, and more at Core for Faculty and Staff.

If you need help with a student, you are not alone. Our students are often going through intensely challenging things while here at Xavier. Advisors are frequently a point-of-contact where they will confide these concerns. If you think a student needs more help than you can provide, you can file a Student Concern Report and get them the help they need.
