The year of the pig
February 7, 2019 |
Seems auspicious, doesn't it? The year of the pig in the city where pigs fly?The Chinese New Year brings to mind two thoughts: there are a diverse array of approaches to marking time on this planet; and the calendars we keep reflect our cultural identities even as they shape our experience of the world.
Whether you prefer moon-marking or sun-worshipping – or some of both – there’s a calendar for you. And feel free to debate the relative merits of Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory XIII.
For those of you planning to celebrate with Xavier’s Asian & American Students in Action (ASIA) on Friday night, and also for those who’d prefer spending the evening wrangling a medieval computus to verify which days in April we won’t hold classes, I wish you all a glorious, porcine new year.
新年快乐!
