Summer workshops include Painting and Surface Design on Silk. Ms. Uetz earned her BSFA and Master of Fine Arts in Fibers from the University of Cincinnati, minoring in Art Education. She is a member of the Surface Design Association, the Handweavers Guild of America, the Weavers Guild and the Craft Guild of Greater Cincinnati. Ms. Uetz has served as Director of the Xavier University Art Gallery since 1998. M. Katherine has exhibited at the Textile Museum and the Women's National Democratic Club, Washington, D.C.; the Torpedo Factory in Old Town, Alexandria, VA; the Cahoon Museum, Cotuit, MA; the Ocean City Arts Center, Ocean City, NJ; the Carnegie Arts Center, Covington, KY; Pima College in Tucson, AZ; Dayton Visual Arts Center, Dayton, OH; Palos Verdes Art Center, Palos Verdes, CA; and the Canton Art Museum, Canton, OH; as well as at the XU Art Gallery and in private collections throughout the U.S. Her current work focuses on the removal of color from velvet to produce imagery that reflects the beauty of nature. In her tapestries and capes, she combines techniques - ancient Japanese Shibori with chemical discharge dyeing - to create the images that appear upon the cloth as animals, bones, feathers, leaves and other mysterious patterns. The soft, sensuous cloth produced seems magical to the artist, who creates her art in celebration of life and light.
