Access to Library Resources and Services is available for Xavier University online students and may require your MyXU portal user name and password and/or your Xavier ID (ALL Card). Please review the library's Notice of Responsible Use.
borrowing Services are available for materials in the XPLORE and OhioLINK library catalogs. XPLORE is Xavier's library catalog and OhioLINK is the combined library catalog for about 85 academic and public libraries in the State of Ohio. See borrowing privileges for undergraduate and graduate students for information about loan periods, renewals, loan limits, overdue fines and replacement charges.
To use these services at Xavier online students must first create an account in ILLiad, Xavier's interlibrary loan service (instructions). When creating your account select the status of Online Student and be sure to enter your off-campus address. You then have the following options for borrowing books and audiovisuals:
-
XPLORE materials are requested online. Find the book you want, click the Request button, enter your MyXU portal user name and password, and select the Pickup Location of Online Student. For online students who live more than 30 miles from campus and who are not attending any classes on campus, materials are delivered via UPS in 3-5 days. Students should return these materials via UPS. Students who do not meet the above criteria need to pick up and return XPLORE materials on campus at the Connection Center desk in the Conaton Learning Commons.
-
For students living in the State of Ohio, OhioLINK materials are requested online. Find the book you want, click the Request button, select Xavier University as your institution, enter your MyXU portal user name and password, and select the Pickup Location of an OhioLINK library close to where you live. Materials are delivered to the OhioLINK library you selected in 3-5 days (see pickup anywhere in these instructions). Materials should be returned to the OhioLINK library you selected.
-
For students living outside the State of Ohio, OhioLINK materials are requested online. Find the book you want, click the Request button, select Xavier University as your institution, enter your MyXU portal user name and password, and select the Pickup Location of Xavier Online Student. Materials are delivered to you in 5-10 days via UPS (see pickup anywhere in these instructions). Return these materials to Xavier via UPS.
-
Request books and audiovisuals not at Xavier or in OhioLINK through ILLiad (instructions for use). These materials are delivered to you via UPS in 10-15 days. Return these materials to Xavier via UPS.
Education Services include virtual library instruction, orientations, and research consultations. Contact the librarian liaison for your academic department/program area and schedule a library orientation or research consultation. You can also chat, text, email, or talk with the librarian on duty at the reference desk.
Electronic Collections, such as research databases, electronic full-text journals, electronic books, Xavier and OhioLINK streaming videos, and the XPLORE and OhioLINK library catalogs, can be accessed from off-campus locations. All of these collections can be searched at once through Search @ XU.
Electronic Reserves (eRes) (http://library.xu.edu/) permits students to find, view save and print course materials that have been placed on reserve by instructors. These materials may include journal articles, book chapters, syllabi, course notes, and more. Most of the time you will access these materials through Blackboard without a password. However, if you access these materials directly in the electronic reserves system, you will need a course password. If you do not know your password, contact your professor, the research help desk at 513 745-4808 (hours), or your librarian liaison.
Help A to Z provides online help for many library resources and services. In addition, there is a separate help page just for online students.
ILLiad (interlibrary Loan Services) may be used to request materials not at Xavier or in OhioLINK. When setting up your account follow these instructions, making sure you select the Status of Online Student. Articles, book chapters, and other documents are made available to you in digital format. Notice of their arrival is sent to the email you supplied in your ILLiad account. Books, videos and other physical items are sent to the postal address you supplied in your ILLiad account. See these FAQs for Online Students for more information. RefWorks is an online bibliographic management service that permits you to create a database of references from search results in online research databases. In-text citations and and bibliographies are automatically formatted with the click of a button in a citation style of your choosing. For more information, view the RefWorks help page. Research Help:
Subject Guides group library resources by subject which help you to find articles in research databases, books, journals, media, websites, a librarian liaison and context-specific help in a specific academic discipline. Library resources and services may also be included in your Blackboard courses or in the library's LibGuides.
TurnItIn is the library's plagiarism prevention and detection service. Your professor will let you know if this service will be a part of your Blackboard course. For help using this service, see:
